If you've spent any time around portable Bluetooth speakers, you've almost certainly come across JBL. The company has been building a reputation for powerful, reliable audio for decades, dating back to 1946 when James B. Lansing founded the brand. Since then, JBL has supplied speakers for concert tours, cinemas, recording studios and homes around the world. That professional heritage has gradually made its way into products we can throw into a backpack, take to the beach or keep on the patio, and the JBL Flip 7 is one of the best examples yet.
For anyone working in a home studio, there's something refreshing about stepping away from the desk at the end of the day. After hours spent editing audio, recording voiceovers or mixing projects through studio monitors and headphones, sometimes you simply want to enjoy music without analysing every frequency. That's exactly where the JBL Flip 7 shines. It's designed for leisure first, delivering room-filling sound wherever you happen to be, whether that's the backyard, the park, a campsite or by the pool.
One of the biggest improvements is JBL's new Bold JBL Pro Sound with AI Sound Boost. That's quite a mouthful, but it delivers exactly what you'd hope. The speaker constantly analyses your music in real time and intelligently adjusts its output to maximise performance while minimising distortion. The result is a speaker that sounds impressively full for its size, with punchy bass, crisp vocals and enough volume to keep everyone happy without sounding strained.
Battery life has also received a welcome upgrade. The JBL Flip 7 offers up to 16 hours of playtime. That's 14 hours on a single charge, with an additional 2 hours available using Playtime Boost mode when you need to squeeze a little more life from the battery. Whether you're spending an afternoon in the garden, enjoying a picnic or heading away for the weekend, you probably won't be searching for a charger before everyone else starts asking who's in charge of the playlist.
If your gatherings have a habit of growing from 'just a couple of friends' into something resembling a neighbourhood festival, the Flip 7 has you covered there too. Multi-speaker connection by Auracast allows compatible speakers to work together, creating a much larger soundstage. One speaker is great. Two speakers sound even better. Several speakers scattered around the yard? Suddenly you're wondering if you accidentally organised a music festival instead of a barbecue.
Outdoor use is clearly one of the Flip 7's strengths. It carries an IP68 rating, meaning it's resistant to both dust and water. Rain showers, sandy beaches, dusty trails or an accidental splash by the pool are all part of normal life for this speaker. Obviously, deliberately launching it into a lake isn't part of the official testing procedure, but it's reassuring to know it can handle life's little accidents without causing panic.
JBL has also introduced its new PushLock system with interchangeable accessories. Rather than being stuck with a single carrying option, you can quickly swap compatible accessories depending on where you're heading. It's a thoughtful addition that makes transporting the speaker easier, whether you're clipping it to a backpack, carrying it by hand or finding another convenient way to take your music with you.
Sustainability is another welcome part of the Flip 7 story. The speaker incorporates 77% post-consumer recycled plastic along with 100% recycled fabric covering the speaker grille. Even the packaging has received attention, using FSC-certified paper printed with soy ink. It's encouraging to see manufacturers reducing environmental impact without compromising build quality or performance.
The companion JBL app adds another layer of flexibility. Through the app, you can adjust EQ settings, manage compatible speakers, update firmware and personalise your listening experience. Most people will be perfectly happy straight out of the box, but it's nice to have additional control available whenever you want to fine tune the sound to suit your own preferences.
Of course, not everyone needs quite this much speaker. If portability is your highest priority, or you're looking to spend a little less, the smaller JBL Clip 5 remains an excellent alternative. It clips easily onto backpacks, belts and bags, making it ideal for hiking, travelling or simply carrying around all day. Naturally, its smaller size means it can't produce the same bass or overall volume as the Flip 7, but it's still remarkably capable for such a compact speaker. The JBL Flip 7 strikes an impressive balance between portability, durability and genuinely enjoyable sound. It's small enough to take almost anywhere, rugged enough to survive real life and powerful enough to keep the music flowing long after sunset. For home studio users, it's a perfect reminder that not every listening session has to be about waveforms, compressors and reference mixes. Sometimes it's enough to step outside, press play, relax with friends and simply enjoy the music the way it was meant to be heard.
